A Popular Frozen Food Brand Recalled for Contamination in 15 States
Getting kids, or even adults, to eat their veggies can be a challenge, which is why many brands opt for creative and fun ways to encourage consumption.
One such brand, Dr. Praeger's, has been a staple in the frozen food industry for over three decades, offering kid-friendly options like dino-shaped broccoli bites. Recently, a recall was issued for a Dr. Praeger's product in several states, sparking concerns about contamination.
Last week, a recall notice for a Dr. Praeger's product appeared on Publix's website but was quickly taken down, leading to confusion among consumers. However, on Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially announced the recall of 8,665 cases of Dr. Praeger's California Veggie Fries in eight-ounce boxes.
The reason behind the recall is the presence of soy, a common food allergen. Given that the product is marketed as a "veggie fry" aimed at children, it's important to note that approximately 0.4% of children have a soy allergy, according to experts. Soy allergies are more common in young children compared to older age groups.
The recalled Dr. Praeger's products can be identified by the UPC and lot numbers: 80868-1931404 and I24BI-01A, respectively. The recall affects several states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, Illinois, and others.
Dr. Praeger's Veggie Fries are promoted as containing 10 different vegetables, offering a nutritious snack option for consumers. However, due to the presence of undeclared soy in the recalled batches, the brand took swift action to rectify the situation.
The FDA classified the recall as a Class II, indicating a moderate risk level where exposure to the product could cause temporary or reversible health issues, with a low probability of serious consequences.
Dr. Praeger's Response
Following the recall, Dr. Praeger's issued a statement acknowledging the error and emphasizing their commitment to consumer safety. The brand identified a packaging mix-up during production, where Cauliflower Broccoli Veggie Fries were incorrectly packed as California Veggie Fries, leading to the soy contamination.
While fewer than 50 mislabeled packages are estimated to be in the market, Dr. Praeger's prioritized caution, particularly for individuals with soy allergies. The brand is working closely with the FDA and retail partners to address the issue effectively and prevent similar incidents in the future.
As of now, there have been no reported illnesses or allergic reactions linked to the recalled product. Dr. Praeger's reiterates that the product is safe for consumers without soy allergies but recognizes the importance of accurate labeling for all customers.
