Chewing Gum Found to Release Microplastics
Research has shown that microplastics, tiny pieces of plastic, can be ingested through various food and beverage products. A recent study conducted in March 2025 by the American Chemical Society (ACS) revealed that chewing gum can also release microplastics into saliva, potentially leading to their ingestion.
The study, carried out by engineering researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), examined 10 types of gum, including five synthetic and five natural brands. Synthetic gums use petroleum-based substances for their chewy factor, while natural gums utilize plant-based options like chicle or tree sap.
During the study, participants were asked to chew gum samples for four minutes each while providing saliva samples every 30 seconds. The researchers found that both synthetic and natural gums released similar amounts of microplastics while being chewed, with an average of 100 microplastic particles released per gram of gum.
According to Lisa Lowe, a UCLA graduate student involved in the research, some gum samples released up to 600 microplastic particles per gram. This means that chewing on a large piece of gum could result in the ingestion of around 30,000 microplastics.
Despite these findings, principal investigator Sanjay Mohanty, an associate professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UCLA, emphasized that the safety of microplastics in the human body is still uncertain. While microplastics have been found in various human body parts, including placentas and organs, there is a lack of human trials to determine their potential health effects.
