Fasting at This Hour Improved Heart, Blood Pressure, and Sugar Levels in a New Study
Are you guilty of late-night snacking? A recent study published in the American Heart Association's Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology journal may make you think twice before reaching for that midnight snack. The study, conducted by researchers at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, found that fasting at night could have significant benefits for heart and metabolic health.
The study, which involved 39 participants aged 36 to 75 who were overweight or obese, implemented an extended overnight fasting intervention of 13-16 hours or a control condition of habitual fasting for 11-13 hours. Additionally, participants dimmed their lights and refrained from eating three hours before bedtime. The results of the study were nothing short of remarkable.
After 7.5 weeks, participants in the extended overnight fasting group experienced improvements in various health markers. Their blood pressure showed better "dipping" during sleep, a known indicator of cardiovascular health, with an average improvement of 3.5%. Heart rate rhythms improved overnight, dropping by an average of 5%, indicating that the heart was working more efficiently. Furthermore, blood sugar regulation improved during the day, suggesting better insulin release and steadier blood sugar levels.
While the study group was small and the duration short, with participants only followed for a couple of months, the researchers were encouraged by the results. In fact, 90% of the participants continued to follow the fasting protocol after the study ended, indicating the potential for sustainable behavior change.
This study highlights the importance of simple lifestyle modifications in improving health outcomes. By implementing an extended overnight fasting routine, individuals may experience significant improvements in heart and metabolic health. So, next time you feel tempted to raid the fridge late at night, consider the potential benefits of giving your body a break.
In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the impact of fasting on heart, blood pressure, and sugar levels. By making small changes to our daily routines, we can significantly improve our overall health and well-being. So, why not give overnight fasting a try and see the positive effects it can have on your body? Your heart will thank you for it.
