Recalled Shrimp
As per Walmart's information, the recalled shrimp was sold in select Walmart stores in 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, and West Virginia.
Cesium Contamination Concern
The FDA warns that the shrimp products may have been contaminated with Cs-137, a radioactive isotope. While the detected Cs-137 was found in a single shipment of imported frozen shrimp that did not enter U.S. commerce, the agency emphasizes that the level detected in the detained shipment does not pose an acute hazard to consumers.
Health Impacts
Long-term exposure to Cs-137 through contaminated food or water could potentially lead to an elevated cancer risk. The FDA has taken regulatory action against PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati due to violations of the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act.
Recall Instructions
If you have purchased any of the recalled shrimp products, the FDA advises against consuming them and recommends disposing of them immediately. Distributors and retailers are also urged to take the same precautionary measures. It's essential to consult a healthcare provider if there are concerns about potential exposure to elevated levels of cesium.
Conclusion
The FDA's investigation into the matter is ongoing, and updated information will be provided as it becomes available. Stay informed about product recalls and health updates by subscribing to The Healthy newsletter and following The Healthy on social media.
