"Petroleum Jelly Recall Alert: Lavender Mix-Up Sparks FDA Concern"

Popular Petroleum Jelly Has Been Recalled Nationwide

From moisturizing sensitive skin to providing wound care, petroleum jelly is one of those household products with multiple uses. But a Tuesday report from a U.S. governmental agency reveals that if you opted for the classic fragrance-free option at four of the nation's well-known retailers, you may have discovered a little something extra in your jar.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a recall for 1,015 cases of petroleum jelly labeled under four brands: Rite Aid, CVS, Harris Teeter, and Kroger. Research suggests petroleum jelly may typically be distributed as 12 jars per case, which would equal an estimated 12,180 jars.

Recalled product details include ("Net Weight" refers to per single unit):

  • Petroleum Jelly, White Petrolatum USP
  • Net Weight: 13 OZ (368g)
  • Sold under the following brands:
    • Rite Aid, with UPC 0-11822-51349-4, lot # 0607983, expiration date: 07/2026, NDC # 11822-3135-2
    • Kroger, with UPC 0-41260-35275-1, lot # 0607983, expiration date: 07/2026, NDC # 30142-069-27
    • Harris Teeter, with UPC 0-72036-75051-8, lot # 0607983, expiration date: 07/2026, NDC # 72036-069-27
    • CVS, with UPC 0-50428-31702-0, lot # 0607983, expiration date: 07/2026, NDC # 59779-069-27

A labeling mix-up seems to be the concern, as the FDA report "product labeled as pure white petroleum jelly actually contains petroleum jelly with Lavender and Chamomile."

Lavender and chamomile are usually tied to peaceful thoughts of sleep or relaxation, but being unknowingly exposed to these scents could cause issues for some. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says certain individuals are "more likely to experience allergic reactions to chamomile if they're allergic to related plants such as ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies." The National Eczema Association also says lavender is "not recommended" for people with eczema, as there's a risk of either irritation or allergic reactions.

The recalling firm, Consumer Product Partners, LLC of Smyrna, TN, was linked to both hydrogen peroxide and hand sanitizer recalls earlier this year. The company is a private label manufacturer, according to its website, meaning they produce goods that are licensed and sold under various brand names.

While it's not immediately clear why the recall resurfaced in the FDA's enforcement reports this week, the event is marked as "completed," indicating the products are likely no longer available to purchase. However, with expiration dates that stretch into next year, this serves as a helpful reminder to check those bathroom cabinets.
