Costco Recalls Popular Dubai Style Chocolate Product Due to Allergen Mislabeling

If you visited any state fairs over the summer, undoubtedly there were some classic fair foods you just couldn’t pass up. (Funnel cakes, anyone?) But it’s also likely you may have seen or even tried new eats, including some inspired by trendy desserts first popularized on social media.

For those of us now searching in stores for at-home versions of those sweets, here’s a heads-up: one increasingly popular dessert pick apparently mislabeled a potentially dangerous allergen.

According to a September 4 notice released by Costco, Rolling Pin Dubai Style Chocolate, sold at the big box retailer between May 1, 2025, and August 29, 2025, contained unlisted wheat. Reportedly, the allergen statement inadvertently listed gluten as the allergen instead of wheat. The Rolling Pin company website states the Dubai Style Chocolate can be found “at select Costco locations.”

The affected product is packaged in a green, resealable bag featuring an image of the treat broken in half to highlight its signature creamy and crunchy filling. The Costco notice says its item number is #1932972.

“We assess the health risk to be minimal as gluten is listed on the allergen statement and gluten is found in wheat. In addition, Kunefa (which is known to contain wheat) is also listed in the ingredients statement,” the advisory notes.

A January 2025 New York Times article featuring the creator of Dubai chocolate, Sarah Hamouda, says she was inspired by knafeh, a Middle Eastern dessert with “cream or akkawi cheese, shredded phyllo known as kataifi, nuts or date syrup, and orange blossom or rose water.” Dubai chocolate typically contains milk chocolate, pistachio cream, and the shredded phyllo dough.

The dessert first went viral in 2024, thanks to its unique texture and visual appeal. TikTok influencer Maria Vehera, who shares food reviews of cuisine in the United Arab Emirates, is often credited for launching the global obsession after introducing the products to her audience of over three million. Her video currently has more than 136 million views.

Pistachios have also surged in popularity in recent years, with The Guardian going so far as to call the flavor “the new pumpkin spice” for its ubiquity. Pistachios are considered a complete protein, meaning they contain all nine of the essential amino acids your body needs but cannot produce on its own.

However, this is not the first recall affecting Dubai chocolates this year. In August, various brands of Dubai chocolates and Dubai chocolate spreads were pulled from shelves in the U.S. and Canada after authorities discovered evidence of Salmonella contamination.

“In the event there are any wheat allergies in your household,” the recall notice instructs those consumers to return the item to a local Costco for a full refund.
