A Recall on 7,500 Lbs. of Cheese in 5 States Just Received a Critical Update
It was late summer 2025 when we first learned that 5,400 pounds of six types of cheese had been recalled from Walmart stores and some independent retailers. Newly published information today from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) adds more than 2,000 pounds to that quantity, and three more cheese varieties for a reported total of nine.
Middlefield Original Cheese Cooperative was the Amish-operated dairy facility in Ohio’s Geauga County that first recalled cheese. After their August recall announcement, in September they subsequently expanded the recall across three more states for Listeria concerns. (Pennsylvania, Texas, and Minnesota were named, while today the FDA adds Wisconsin to the list.) At that point, Walmart stated some product may have been sold at Sam's Club locations in multiple unnamed states.
Today’s news reveals that a total of 7,455 pounds were recalled for “Potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes,” receiving a Class I FDA classification. This means that following investigation, the government agency has determined this to be “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” It is the FDA’s highest health risk level.
Three additional products now appear on the FDA report. An earlier list included the following cheese products with product details:
- Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op Organic Gouda
- 8 oz. packages, Sell by date of 2/13/2026
- Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op Mozzarella/Provolone Cheese
- 5 lb. bags (shredded cheese), Sell by date of 9/3/2025
- Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op Colored (Yellow) Cheddar Cheese
- 5 lb. loaves (labeled as Smoked Cheddar and All Natural Mild Cheddar), Sell by date of 2/13/2026

- Middlefield Original Cheese Co-Op Monterey Jack Cheese

- 1.25 lb. package (labeled as Dilly Pickle Jack) with lot code 253054, Sell by date of 12/30/25
Other apparent distinct information in the new FDA report reveals that five-pound loaves of provolone were affected, as well as the same size of mozzarella. Both of these appear to have been recalled as standalone products separate from their blend.
Swiss in two-pound deli bags, packed five bags per case, now also appear to have been impacted—not only the five-pound loaves.
While the most recent Sell-By date was February 13, 2026, good fridge cleanouts for some customers may still be in order. Listeria is one of the rare foodborne microbes that grows even in refrigeration. The United States Department of Agriculture says, “Listeriosis is especially dangerous for at-risk groups such as pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborns, older adults, those with weakened immune systems.” Symptoms can be comparable to the flu, or more severe in some cases.
