Taking This Vitamin Slowed Aging Even More Than a Daily Antioxidant: New Harvard Study
In recent years, there has been ongoing debate about the effectiveness of taking a daily multivitamin. While some question the necessity of adding a multivitamin to their daily routine, a new study published in Nature Medicine has shed light on the benefits of incorporating a specific multivitamin into your diet.
The study, conducted by a team of researchers from Harvard University-affiliated organizations, the University of Science and Technology of China, the Georgia Prevention Institute and Augusta University, and California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute, aimed to explore the effects of a daily multivitamin on biological aging.
Over a span of two years, the study examined 958 individuals, split evenly between males and females, who were assigned to take either a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement, a daily cocoa extract supplement containing 500 milligrams of cocoa flavanols, or a placebo. The specific multivitamin used in the study was Centrum Silver.
The researchers measured biological aging using five "epigenetic clocks," which are molecular markers that estimate the rate of aging at the cellular level. These clocks analyzed factors such as biological age, pace of aging, and the risks of age-related diseases and mortality.
The findings of the study revealed that taking a daily multivitamin, specifically Centrum Silver, modestly slowed the rate of biological aging on two of the five epigenetic clocks tested. This effect was most prominent in individuals who were already aging faster than expected biologically. On the other hand, the cocoa extract supplement showed no measurable effect on any of the five aging clocks.
Although the effect of multivitamin usage on slowing biological aging was deemed statistically significant but small, the research team emphasized the importance of further studies to understand the impact of multivitamins on aging-related chronic conditions.
Overall, recent research has indicated that multivitamins not only support brain health and may help manage blood pressure but also play a role in slowing down biological aging. Consulting with your healthcare provider can help determine the best way to incorporate a multivitamin into your daily routine to ensure optimal absorption of essential nutrients.
