When it comes to Fat Tuesday celebrations in the Southern United States, seafood dishes often take center stage. However, a recent health report from a top U.S. agency has put a damper on seafood lovers' appetites. A Los Angeles area-based wholesale seafood distributor, H & N Group, has issued a recall for 3,780 one-pound bags of frozen cooked medium shrimp due to concerns about contamination with Cesium-137 (Cs-137). The recall, which was initiated on February 9, has left consumers in the greater Houston and Gulf Coast areas on edge. The FDA's alert on the recall highlighted the potential health risks associated with the radioactive isotope Cs-137, stating that prolonged exposure to this substance could have adverse health impacts when combined with radiation from other sources. The affected shrimp, which was distributed to a single retail consignee with approximately 30 locations, bears the lot numbers EA14 25118 and EA14 25119, with best-by dates of October 28, 2026, and October 29, 2026, respectively. Despite the FDA's Class II designation for this event, which indicates a low probability of severe health consequences, consumers are advised to exercise caution. This recall is just the latest in a series of food recalls that have plagued the seafood industry in recent months. In February alone, frozen salmon was recalled due to potential Listeria contamination, further raising concerns about the safety of the food supply chain. As consumers, it is essential to stay informed and vigilant about the products we consume to ensure our health and well-being. Let's hope for more stringent measures and safeguards in the food industry to prevent such incidents in the future.
