In a troubling turn of events, more than 22,000 cartons of juice have been recalled due to contamination from a cleaning solution, raising alarms about the potential health risks associated with tainted beverages.

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall on November 5, alerting consumers to the tainted product. Hollandia Dairy, Inc., based in San Marcos, California, voluntarily recalled 22,700 units of its 100% Appleberry Juice after discovering contamination with peracetic acid, a cleaning solution that poses serious health risks if ingested.

This recall hits close to home for many, as the affected juice was distributed to various schools in California, including San Bernardino, Highland, Romoland, Menifee, Winchester, Hemet, and Fontana. Additionally, the distribution list included "Camp Pendleton," a major base of the United States Marine Corps located in San Diego County.

The contaminated product, packaged in half-pint (236 mL) cartons with the Universal Product Code (UPC) 0 27495 03679 6 and the code "Nov 28," has the potential to cause harm if consumed. Peracetic acid, commonly used as a sanitizer in various industries, can irritate the mouth, throat, and stomach upon ingestion. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that peracetic acid is corrosive to the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract.

On December 12, the FDA classified the recall as a Class II incident, signaling that while the product may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, the probability of serious harm is considered remote. Despite this classification, the potential risks associated with consuming the contaminated juice cannot be ignored.
