It’s one of those ingredients that brings flavor to so many dishes - onion. Although, it's worth noting that dietitians say onion can be irritating to your gut. But if that doesn't deter you, here's something that might give you pause - a U.S. governmental agency has alerted consumers that one form of an onion product may contain an unwanted addition.

In a report released recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicly announced a recall of 11,100 pounds of what seems to be a dry onion spice. The agency states that the recall is due to "Foreign object (metal) in granulated onion ingredient."

The recalling company named in the report is PAX Spices & Labs Inc, based in Covina, CA, which describes itself as a Southern California-based importer, manufacturer's representative, and wholesale distributor for exotic and aromatic spices, herbs, oleoresins, essential oils, natural colors, and more.

A list of products on the PAX Spices & Labs website includes granulated onion, available in pack sizes of 50-pound bulk bags, 5-pound bottles, or 1-pound bottles. The company also offers private labeling services. The FDA reports that the recalled product "is distributed to 10 customers who further process the ingredient into a final product," indicating that the company likely supplies to food producers.

Additional details provided by the FDA include the product being distributed in bulk brown paper bags, with Lot # 7I08242057 and MFG Lot # IO820WOG2057.

The recall, which is classified as "ongoing," was initiated on August 1. On August 12, the FDA officially designated it as a Class II recall. This classification means that the agency has determined that the use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.
