"High-Risk Spice Recall: FDA Upgrades Celery Seed Alert"

The FDA Announces High-Risk Spice Recall

Eggs, milk, and now spices are on the FDA's radar for potential contamination issues. The latest recall involves 24,694 pounds of whole organic celery seed from The Whole Herb Company, Inc.

Celery seed, a common spice used to add flavor to various dishes, is now at the center of attention due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to renowned spice company McCormick, celery seed is known for its "earthy flavor" and is used in recipes for marinades, soups, salad dressings, and even homemade pickles.

The FDA issued an update on Wednesday, upgrading the recall to a Class I designation, the agency's most severe warning. Products under a Class I recall are those that pose a serious health risk or could potentially lead to death.

Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause food poisoning, resulting in symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains. It is one of the most common forms of foodborne illness in the U.S., according to the Cleveland Clinic.

While the recall was initially announced on May 27, it was only this week that the FDA raised it to the highest risk level. The affected celery seed was distributed to Iowa, but it is unclear whether it reached consumers, retailers, wholesalers, or other vendors.
