"Massive Seafood Recall: 45,000 Pounds Pulled from Stores"
Nearly 45,000 Pounds of Seafood Have Been Recalled in 3 States
Looking to add some shrimp to your meals this summer? Shrimp is a classic choice that can provide nutritional benefits such as omega-3s, protein, and vitamin B12. It's a versatile ingredient that can elevate any dish, from pasta salads to stir-fries.
However, if you have a bag of shrimp in your freezer, you might want to check the label to ensure it's not part of a recent recall.
This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall of 44,550 pounds of Cooked & Peeled Ready-To-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat from Bornstein Seafoods. The products were sold in 1-pound or 5-pound plastic bags under the market name "Shrimp" with a product description as "Coldwater Shrimp Meat."
The reason for the recall is "Potential Foodborne Illness - Listeria monocytogenes." Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious infections, especially in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis infection include fever, headache, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The affected shrimp products were distributed to distributors and retailers in California, Oregon, and Washington. However, they may have been further distributed and sold nationwide. The recall also extends to Canada's British Columbia.
While the specific stores that sold the recalled shrimp are not mentioned in the report, there is a possibility that they were available on Amazon, as the company's recalls page links to the FDA report.
Fifteen types of products are involved in the recall, each with unique item numbers, Universal Product Codes (UPC), master class label descriptions, and lot numbers. The FDA provides a detailed list of these products in their recall report.
According to the recall notice, Bornstein Seafoods Inc., a family-owned business based in Bellingham, Washington, identified Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in an in-process shrimp sample during a routine inspection. The company has halted product distribution and is conducting an investigation to determine the root cause of the issue.
As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of illness related to the recalled products.
Consumers are advised to return the recalled products to the place of purchase for a full refund.
