Seasonal Bakery Item Recall: What You Need to Know
The holiday season is a time for festive gatherings, delicious food, and sweet treats. However, a recent recall announcement has put a damper on the season for customers of a popular regional retailer. If you've recently purchased bakery items from this specific chain, you'll want to pay close attention to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.
On December 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice regarding a particular batch of Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake. The recall was initiated by The James Skinner LLC due to incorrect labeling of the product. According to the announcement, the coffee cake was packaged with Maple Walnut Coffee Cake labels but was mistakenly individually labeled as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake. This error has raised concerns about potential hazards associated with consuming the mislabeled product.
The mix-up was first identified by an observant store employee who noticed visible walnuts on top of the coffee cake that was labeled as Raspberry Coffee Cake. The Raspberry Coffee Cake label indicates that the product may contain almonds, pecans, and walnuts due to processing on shared equipment. However, the ingredient list of the Raspberry Coffee Cake does not include walnuts. On the other hand, the Maple Walnut Coffee Cake visibly contains walnuts as an ingredient, making it essential for consumers to be aware of this discrepancy.
The mislabeled coffee cakes were distributed to Publix stores across eight states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The recall affects specific products from a single day's production and has been rectified since the discovery of the labeling error.
If you have purchased the recalled product, look for the following identifiers to determine if it is labeled incorrectly:
Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake individually labeled as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake
- Size: 14 ounces
- Lot code: 5309
- SKU: 54591
- Date of manufacture: 11/5/2025
While no illnesses have been reported thus far, consumers who have bought the affected coffee cake are advised to return it to the store of purchase for a full refund. Additionally, individuals with a walnut allergy are strongly urged not to consume the product, as it could pose a serious health risk.
