**3 Types of Salad Dressing Have Been Recalled in a Total of 27 States**
Adding dressing to a salad doesn't just amp up the flavor—honestly, sometimes it's what completes the meal. Experts at the Cleveland Clinic recommend skipping the creamy dressings in favor of an oil or vinegar option to maximize the health benefits, but if you've recently added one of three types of dressing to your favorite fresh veggies, it's worth double-checking if that option was safe to eat. According to a recent notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), certain ranch, Italian, and caesar dressings have all been recalled from major retailers across the country.
Ventura Foods, LLC, a food product manufacturer and distributor, has voluntarily recalled 3,556 cases of salad dressings due to the potential presence of "foreign objects in granulated onion" in the dressing. The foreign object is described in the report as "black plastic planting material." Seven hundred cases of a non-dressing product, Publix Deli Carolina-Style Mustard BBQ Sauce, also distributed by Ventura Foods, have been recalled for the same reason.
The dressings and BBQ sauce were distributed to seven retail customers, including Costco and Publix, in 27 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
According to its website, Ventura Foods, LLC manufactures a variety of cooking products, including cooking oils, dressings, sauces and condiments, margarines and butter blends, mayonnaise, beverage mixes, and dessert mixes. The affected dressings and BBQ sauces to watch for are as follows:
- Italian Salad Dressing; Net 1 GAL (3.78L); SKU: 7 67367 00518 4

Due to the larger container sizes listed in the report, it's likely these dressings and BBQ sauces were used for foodservice purposes.
The recall was voluntarily initiated on November 6, but the FDA recently classified it as a Class II recall on December 4. A Class II recall denotes a situation where exposure to the food or product may cause "temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," but the probability of those serious health effects is likely low.
While a public press release was not issued, Ventura Foods notified customers via e-mail of the recalled products. The recall is currently ongoing.
