The FDA Announces Cheese Recall Due to E. Coli Outbreak in 4 States

A recent outbreak of E. coli infections connected to raw milk cheese has prompted the FDA to issue a warning to consumers. The outbreak, which has affected individuals in Washington and Oregon, involved three reported cases of infections caused by E. coli O103.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified two types of cheese from Twin Sisters Creamery that are being recalled due to potential contamination: item #28855 Whatcom Blue and item #29608 Farmhouse Cheese. These products were sold in half-moon shaped pieces wrapped in clear plastic and weighing approximately five to six ounces each.

Additional varieties of cheese, including Peppercorn and Mustard Seed aged cheeses, are also included in the recall advisory issued by the Washington State Department of Health. The affected products may have been repackaged by retailers, making it important for consumers to check for these items in their refrigerators.

The FDA warns that Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can lead to serious and potentially fatal infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of E. coli O103 may include severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and vomiting.

In some cases, E. coli O103 can progress to a condition known as Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, which can result in kidney failure and other severe complications. The FDA emphasizes the importance of seeking medical attention if any symptoms of illness are experienced.

Three illnesses related to the contaminated cheese have been reported, with distribution of the products spanning multiple states including Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The recall covers cheese distributed between August 14, 2025, and October 24, 2025.

The issue came to light when samples of Farmhouse cheese tested positive for E. coli O103, prompting further investigation and recall measures. While the affected cheese may no longer be available for purchase, consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and dispose of any recalled products.

If consumers still have the affected cheese in their possession, they are instructed to avoid consuming it, discard the products, and thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with the cheese. Refunds may be available for the recalled items at the place of purchase.
