"Glass Recall Alert: Clover Valley Instant Coffee from Discount Store"
A Favorite Type of Coffee Has Been Recalled From a Budget Retailer in 48 States
In addition to being speedy to make, instant coffee has a superpower: it allows you to control the strength. That’s a benefit if you’re pregnant and trying to keep your caffeine intake under the recommended 200-milligram maximum per day, if you have a different medical condition, or, if you like your cup extra nice and strong.
But before you sit back to sip that daily cup o’ joe, read on for a new warning concerning a product sold by one of the nation’s largest discount retailers.
In an August 11 press release, Dollar General announced a recall of its 8-ounce Clover Valley Instant Coffee “due to the potential presence of glass.” The company says a total of three lots are affected, though it’s not further clarified how many 8-ounce containers may be involved. Clover Valley is a private brand label owned by Dollar General and its largest by sales.
Then, late Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted its own notice concerning the recall. Both reports suggest a customer’s keen eye first noticed the glass. Per the notice: “The recall is being initiated after a customer notified Dollar General employees about the potential issue. Ingesting glass fragments may cause injury to the consumer, and these injuries may include damage to teeth, laceration of the mouth and throat, or perforation of the intestine. No illnesses or injuries have been reported to date.”
Dollar General also says the company is “actively investigating the source of the glass contamination.”
The affected instant coffee was “sold and distributed” this year between July 9 and July 21 and exclusively at Dollar General store locations in the following 48 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
