Fruit Snacks Recall Due to Undeclared Allergen

Many of us have experienced the disappointment of fresh fruits and vegetables going bad before we can enjoy them. That's why nonperishable produce products are gaining popularity. However, a recent recall has shed light on the importance of checking packaging, especially for those who enjoy snacking on dried fruits.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on June 12 that 352 cases of Flora Dried Apricots from Turkana Food Inc. were being recalled due to a potential health risk. The reason cited for the recall was the presence of "Potential or Undeclared Allergen - Sulfites."

Sulfites are commonly used chemicals to prevent spoilage in foods, drinks, and medications. Approximately 4% or 5% of people with asthma are believed to have a sulfite sensitivity, which can lead to asthma attacks or allergy symptoms when exposed to products containing sulfites.

The issue of undeclared sulfites was discovered during routine sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, prompting the company to halt production and distribution of the product while investigations are ongoing to rectify the problem.

As of June 12, there have been no confirmed reports of illness related to the recalled dried apricots. The affected products were distributed in 19 states, including Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, and more.

The recalled product is Floria Dried Apricots in 200-gram paper packaging with the lot number 440090478-15-333 and expiration date of 11/2026. Consumers are urged to check the bottom of the package for the lot number and expiration date and the top for the UPC number.

Turkana Food Inc. is a family-owned ethnic food distributor with a variety of products, including dried fruits. The FDA advises consumers to return the dried apricots to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Conclusion

It's crucial to stay informed about product recalls and take necessary precautions, especially when it comes to allergens like sulfites. By being vigilant about checking packaging and following official recommendations, consumers can protect their health and well-being.
