More Than 730,000 Pounds of Popular Hash Browns Recalled
Enjoying a delicious breakfast is a simple pleasure that many people look forward to, but a recent report from the FDA has shed light on a concerning issue related to restaurant hash brown patties.
The report indicates that an "ongoing" recall, which was first initiated on April 19, impacts foodservice accounts, including restaurants and potentially other food service retailers, of Lamb Weston Inc. Notably, it was reported by CNN in October 2024 that McDonald's, the largest customer of Lamb Weston, sources french fries from the company. Additionally, Wendy's, Taco Bell, Burger King, Popeye's, and Pizza Hut are among the chains that also receive supplies from Lamb Weston, as reported by TODAY.com in the same month. However, it is not specified in the report whether this recall affects products at any of these specific brands.
The recall affects a total of 730,821 pounds, or 34,801 cases each containing six 3.5-pound oval-shaped hash brown patties. These products were distributed in Arizona, Hawaii, Japan, Kuwait, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates.
The reason behind the recall is the presence of "Approximately 1 [millimeter] to 8 [millimeter] sized pieces of foreign material (plastic) found in the product." The company is taking steps to inform customers about the issue through various methods such as Email, Fax, Letter, Press Release, Telephone, and Visit.
The GTIN ("global trade item number") codes for the affected products are listed as follows, with "best by" dates ranging from 2025 to 2026:
10044979923813
50195500004896
10044979923820
10044979922687
For more specific details, refer to the report link provided above.
Although the recall is linked to a location in Washington state, Lamb Weston is headquartered in Idaho and is recognized as one of the world's largest producers and processors of frozen french fries, waffle fries, and other frozen potato products. The company has been subject to market fluctuations due to changing consumer dining preferences and a growing focus on nutrition.
