"USDA Public Health Alert: Campbell's Soup Brands Contaminated"
Campbell’s and Other Soup Brands Public Health Alert
When it comes to notable food brand names, Campbell’s is certainly near the top of the list. First established in 1869, the Campbell’s Company now also includes other familiar brands such as Pepperidge Farm, Prego, and Swanson.
But late Friday, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) made an announcement involving Campbell’s and other soup brands. The agency issued a “public health alert for various soup and bowl products that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically wood, in an FDA-regulated ingredient, cilantro.”
Though currently only “retail and institutional locations” in four states - Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio - are mentioned, the FSIS does offer a caution that they anticipate “other products may be added, which could result in nationwide impacts.”

Photos of the soup and bowl labels were also provided by the FSIS.
The problem of possible foreign material contamination was initially discovered when “an FSIS establishment notified FSIS that an FDA-regulated ingredient was recalled for foreign material.”
The alert notes that the currently mentioned soup and bowl products may be in either consumers’ or institutional refrigerators or freezers. If you have any products matching the ones listed above, the FSIS says you should not consume them - and institutions should not serve them. Instead, throw the products away or return them to your initial place of purchase.
Even if you’re in the clear currently and don’t have any soups matching these descriptions, it’s a worthwhile reminder that more announcements from the FSIS could be on their way.
