A Major Brand Recalls 1,701 Pounds of Butter in 7 States

When it comes to cooking, sometimes that rich, buttery flavor is just what you need, despite the popularity of olive oil and other healthier fats. However, a major dairy brand in the US, Cabot Creamery, has recently issued a warning regarding 1,701 pounds of their butter. According to a report from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Cabot Creamery has recalled eight-ounce packages of their Extra Creamy Premium Butter and Sea Salted butter. The reason for the recall is contamination with elevated levels of coliform bacteria, which can be indicative of fecal contamination.

It's important to note that while coliform bacteria can be concerning, most types are not associated with foodborne illnesses. However, certain strains, such as E. coli, can cause illnesses. This recall was categorized as Class III by the FDA, meaning it is unlikely to cause health problems but violates FDA labeling or manufacturing regulations.

The recalled butter was distributed in seven states: Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Arkansas. The specific product details include:

  • Cabot Creamery 8 oz Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted
  • Packaged as (2) 4 oz sticks in cardboard shells
  • UPC: 0 78354 62038 0
  • Best By: 09/09/25
  • Lot: 090925-055
  • Item #: 2038
  • 189 total cases recalled (1,701 lbs.)

The recalling firm, AGRI-MARK INC of Waitsfield, VT, describes itself as "The Northeast's Premier Dairy Farmer Cooperative." Based on a brief online search, this Cabot butter is available at several retail locations, including Walmart and Publix grocery stores.

If you have purchased the recalled butter, it is advisable not to consume it. Instead, try to return it to the place of purchase and refer to the FDA's information. Symptoms of foodborne illnesses can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever.
