The contamination issue was brought to light after a third party identified the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample of the chicken breast product. Although the exact source of contamination remains unclear, experts note that Listeria monocytogenes is considered rare in poultry. The CDC reports that an average of 1,250 people in the U.S. are infected with Listeria each year, highlighting the importance of food safety measures in preventing such incidents.
The recalled chicken products were distributed to various foodservice establishments in seven states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Ohio. The affected product, fully cooked grilled chicken breast fillets with rib meat, was packaged in 10-pound cases containing two 5-pound bags. Consumers are advised to check for the lot code 60104 P1382 287 5 J14 on the packaging, as well as the establishment number P-1382 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Suzanna's Kitchen, the company behind the recalled chicken products, specializes in providing a variety of meat products to restaurants, schools, cafeterias, and other foodservice operations. While no illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported thus far, the FSIS urges consumers to consult a healthcare professional if they have consumed the affected chicken and experience any health concerns.
