2 Rubbing Alcohol Products Recalled Nationwide
The official arrival of fall earlier this week offers a few timely reminders: for one, don’t forget to schedule your flu shot. Second, with national data showing Covid cases recently on the uptick—and cold and flu season just around the corner—now might be a good time to stock up on disinfectants. But before you wipe down your hands or home surfaces, there are two new recalls that might affect what you use—and at least one of the country’s biggest supermarkets was a retailer.
According to two September 24 updates from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), both alcohol prep pads and bottles of isopropyl alcohol have recently been recalled. Isopropyl alcohol, more commonly referred to as rubbing alcohol, can be helpful in killing certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi, according to the Cleveland Clinic, which recommends the 70% variety for “most household uses.” Alcohol prep pads are typically used for first aid, such as disinfecting a wound, or to clean the skin before injections or vaccinations in healthcare settings.
The 70% Isopropyl Alcohol bottles, distributed nationwide by The Kroger Co., have been recalled due to “cross contamination with other products,” though the report does not further elaborate what type of cross contamination may have occurred. Meanwhile, the Quick Touch Alcohol Prep Pads (Isopropyl Alcohol 70%), which did not have a distribution pattern listed, were recalled for “CGMP Deviations.” The FDA considers CGMP to be “Current Good Manufacturing Practice.”
- 70% Isopropyl Alcohol:
- Branded as Kroger and TopCare Health
- Net weight: 5.5 ounces (156 g) per can
- Recalling firm: Consumer Product Partners, LLC, Smyrna, Tennessee
- Distributed by The Kroger Co., Cincinnati, Ohio
- Lot #: 0662036
- Exp. Date: 06/19/2027
- 1,920 total bottles
- Quick Touch Alcohol Prep Pads (Isopropyl Alcohol 70%):
- Recalling firm: Yangzhou Yulou Paper Products Co., Yangzhou, China
- Lot #: 20240610
- Exp. Date: 06/2029
- 100 sterile pads per case; 500 total cases
On September 23, both groups of products were classified to reflect their risk levels to the public. In the case of the sterile alcohol prep pads, the FDA labeled the incident as a Class II, suggesting that using the product could cause temporary or reversible medical harm. The bottles of isopropyl alcohol are now considered a Class III event, the lowest risk level, which the FDA says is for situations “not likely to cause adverse health consequences.”
