New Study: Boost Your Brain Function with This Unique Mineral
With the number of dementia cases on the rise globally, researchers are striving to find ways to keep our brains healthy and functioning optimally. In a recent study published in Scientific Reports by a team of medical doctors in China, the focus was on the role of micronutrients, particularly the impact of copper intake on cognitive function.
The study involved analyzing data from 2,420 adults aged 60 and older, collected between 2011 and 2014. Participants self-reported their copper intake through detailed food surveys and then underwent cognitive skills tests. The results were intriguing: higher copper intake was associated with better cognitive scores, particularly in individuals who had previously experienced a stroke.
Copper, often overlooked in discussions about essential minerals, is crucial for overall health. It plays a role in neurotransmitter synthesis, cellular energy production, and antioxidant defenses, all of which are vital for brain function. However, as with many nutrients, balance is key, as excessive copper intake can lead to toxicity and neurodegenerative issues.
So, how much copper is enough? The researchers found that consuming around 1.22 milligrams per day was associated with optimal cognitive benefits, just slightly above the recommended daily allowance for adults.
While it's important not to overdo it with copper supplementation, getting this essential mineral from natural food sources is a safe and effective way to support brain health. Foods rich in copper include oysters, whole grains, nuts, potatoes, and dark leafy greens.
