"Healthier Pick: Margarine vs. Butter Recall Alert"
64,800 Pounds of Butter Have Been Recalled
The eternal debate between margarine and butter continues to spark discussions on which is the healthier option for your morning bagel or favorite baked potato. While the Mayo Clinic emphasizes that "Margarine often tops butter when it comes to heart health" due to its lower saturated fat content, some argue that the all-natural ingredients found in certain butter brands might make it the better choice. Recent studies even suggest that butter could have preventive effects against colon cancer risk.
Regardless of your spread preference, a recent alert issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on early Thursday highlighted a recall of 1,800 cases - totaling a whopping 64,800 pounds - of NH European Style Butter Blend produced by Chesterfield, MO-based Bunge Oils. The recall was initiated due to "allergen labeling - undeclared milk."
Even though it might seem obvious that milk is an ingredient in margarine or butter products, listing it on labels is crucial. According to Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), a cow's milk allergy is the most common food allergy in infants, young children, and adults. Data suggests that millions of Americans have an allergy to milk.
The recalled butter blend was distributed to 12 centers across the U.S., as well as one in the Dominican Republic. It appears that the product was mainly for food manufacturers to use in various dairy-based items, rather than being directly available to consumers in stores.
The detailed product information includes:
- NH European Style Butter Blend, Bunge
- Net weight: 1 pound (1 LB)
- MFD IN USA BY: Bunge Oils, Chesterfield, MO 63017
- Packed in white paperboard cases (36 blocks to a case)
- OW NH EURO BLEND SOLIDS 2015918
- Product: 5023937
- UPC: 1 00 78684 73961 2
- Lot code: 5064036503
The recall was initially announced on July 14 and later classified as a Class II event on July 30 by the FDA. Class II recalls are considered to have a low probability of causing serious adverse health consequences.
On the Bunge website, the European Style Butter Blends are described as having a higher oil content than traditional margarines, adding flavor and richness to finished foods.
