Massive Recall of Chicken Sausage Hits Nationwide Shelves

Summertime is all about fresh, healthy grocery shopping and making smarter food choices. From swapping out ranch dressing for hummus to opting for grilled chicken instead of a burger, there are plenty of ways to keep things interesting in the kitchen. However, for those who recently purchased a sausage product touted as a healthier alternative, there's now cause for concern.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recently announced a recall of approximately 24,173 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken sausage products due to the presence of a "foreign material." The product in question, labeled as "ALL NATURAL al fresco CHICKEN SAUSAGE SWEET APPLE with Vermont made syrup," has been found to contain pieces of plastic, prompting the nationwide recall.

Although the chicken sausage is sold under the brand name Al Fresco, the recalling firm is listed as Kayem Foods Inc. located in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Kayem Foods Inc. appears to be the producer of various sausage products associated with the Kayem name.

The recall affects retail locations across the country, with the Al Fresco products being sold at popular grocery chains such as Walmart, Jewel Osco, Kroger, and more. Customers who purchased the affected chicken sausage are advised to check their packaging for the specific details provided by the FSIS.

According to the FSIS report, the recall was initiated following consumer complaints about finding white pieces of plastic in the chicken sausage products. The agency has classified the recall as "HIGH- Class I," indicating a health hazard situation with a reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or death.

The fully cooked sausages, produced on June 28, come in 11-oz. vacuum-packed packages containing four pieces, with a lot code of 179 and a USE/FRZ BY date of OCT 01 2025. Additionally, the packages should bear an establishment number of "P-7839" inside a USDA mark of inspection.

While there have been no reported injuries from consuming the affected products, consumers are encouraged to contact a healthcare provider if they have any concerns. The FSIS advises either disposing of the chicken sausage or returning it to the place of purchase.
